Kimbo v. Tank Abbott?

This is the last thing I’m going to post about this fight–Tank Abbott comes to the cage postfight and calls out Kimbo. The Cage Rage suits say they’re going to make this fight happen. Should this come off it’ll make Tank Abbott/Kimo look like the first Gracie/Sakuraba fight. Kimbo Slice is clearly a tough dude and had good training heading into this matchup tonight (Bas Rutten was his primary trainer) but its hard to take him seriously until he fights a serious MMA fighter. Apparently, Cage Rage wants to promote him–at least for now–as a sideshow attraction. Kimbo definitely has potential in the sport, but Cage Rage is doing MMA a disservice by using WWE-esque gimmicks to promote their organization. And I’m a big fan of pro wrestling (though I have little interest in most of the current product I can go toe-to-toe with anyone on the planet in pro wrestling history trivia). I’d be more interested in watching a fight between Kimbo and Abdullah the Butcher….

Kimbo’s a tough guy but he’s nothing more than a very rough around the edges street fighter. Tank has the reputation of a street fighter but he has been training and fighting in MMA competition for years with some of the best fighters in the world. He’ll expose Kimbo for what he is; a street fighter.

10 years ago I think this would have been a competitive fight. Abbott in his prime was a fearsome striker and a generally tough guy. The problem is that he’s never been too serious about training, and he did little to build on his base and compliment his striking power. More significant than his age, his lack of training dedication has resulted in the sport passing him by. Head over to Sherdog and take a look at his career record. Since 12/96 he’s got a 3-10 MMA record. Some of his losses were to tough SOB’s like Don Frye, but many were to the newer breed MMA fighters who are smart enough not to stand and strike with Tank. Even a guy like Frank Mir–who’s never really recovered from his motorcycle injury and has something of a glass jaw–was able to submit Abbott. Since his MMA “comeback” in 2003, Abbott has a 1-7 MMA record with his lone victory coming against Wesley “Cabbage” Correira. Worth noting that Abbott was avenging a loss to “Cabbage”–not exactly a top tier fighter–suffered in his previous bout.

Still, this is probably a good next step for Kimbo. If he can’t beat an older, limited fighter with a one dimensional game and a non-existent defense (particularly against submissions) he should go back to beating up gangstas on YouTube.

Don’t be fooled by the fact that Ray Mercer is over the hill and really has no business in MMA–Kimbo beat a former World Heavyweight boxing champion the other night. Granted, Mercer is old and didn’t train seriously but Kimbo did everything he needed to in order to neutralize the advantages that a highly trained and experienced boxer would have in a MMA fight (read my blog post on the subject for more on this). Kimbo’s biggest weakness at this point would probably be against a tough fighter with some technical prowess like a Josh Barnett. Even at his best Tank was no Josh Barnett and he’s a good decade past his prime now. I think Kimbo would win the matchup by first round stoppage and if he wasn’t able to beat Tank decisively should probably go back to his YouTube street fighting career.

I agree 100%. For some reason people think that Tank is a badass. He’s 1-7 in his L8 fights with his only victory over Wesley “Cabbage” Correira who ain’t exactly Fedor. And the last time he beat a top notch fighter was…uh….never.

Kimbo’s fought tougher guys in vacant lots…
