Floyd Mayweather, Jr. v. Ricky Hatton a done deal…
InsideFighting is reporting that a matchup between “pound for pound” best in the world Floyd Mayweather, Jr. and likable Manchester native Ricky Hatton has been officially signed. A venue has yet to be announced, but I’d look for it to happen at either the Mandalay Bay Events Center or the Thomas and Mack in Las Vegas.
They are two of boxing’s best, two of the most exciting fighters in the sport today, and both are undefeated. They stand atop their weight divisions and fight fans are in for a thrill as pound-for-pound king of the ring and welterweight champion “Pretty Boy” Floyd Mayweather will meet British icon and junior welterweight champion Ricky “The Hitman” Hatton on Saturday, December 8 for the 147-pound championship. With a combined record of 81-0, this is the biggest match-up of two undefeated welterweights since the record setting mega-fight between Oscar de la Hoya and Felix Trinidad in 1999.
The fight, officially announced today and aptly named “UNDEFEATED”, will be promoted by Golden Boy Promotions and Mayweather Promotions and produced by and distributed live on HBO Pay-Per-View. With several sites interested in hosting this special event, a location will be announced shortly.
“I am extremely excited to announce Golden Boy’s involvement in another boxing extravaganza such as Mayweather vs. Hatton,” said Oscar de la Hoya, President of Golden Boy Promotions. “We are proud to continue to provide fans with the best match-ups and fights in boxing today. This will be an exciting way to end this record-breaking year for the sport.”
As a postscript, I’m going to try my damndest to make it to this fight and if I can work it out some reception or “meet and greet” for ProphetFighting readers in town for the fight may be in the offing. Stay tuned…
UPDATE: A December 8 date has been set for the fight. It’ll happen in Las Vegas–the venue hasn’t been officially announced yet but we’re hearing it’ll be at the MGM Grand Garden.
UPDATE #2: 5 Dimes Sportsbook has posted the first line on the fight:
Floyd Mayweather, Jr. -310
Ricky Hatton +230
UPDATE #3: The early money has come in on Ricky Hatton. Pinnacle Sports now has the fight:
Floyd Mayweather, Jr. -241
Ricky Hatton +221

Pinnacle has Mayweather @ -241. With the exeption of Hatton beating a clearly over the hill Castillo, he has not looked great in winning his last few fights. Does anyone actually think that he can stand toe to toe with Mayweather? Will UK money make Mayweather the wager of the century? I say yes!

And I agree…Hatton sure ain’t the boxer that De La Hoya is, so he’ll have to rely on his power. But you can’t hit what you can’t catch and I don’t see any way that Hatton can catch one of the best defensive fighters the sport has ever seen.
