Evaluating Brock Lesnar’s UFC 81 performance….

…with some evaluation of Frank Mir’s performance at no additional charge. You can read it all at Fantasy Insider Online:

UFC 81 is history and Brock Lesnar is now 1-1 in his MMA career and 0-1 in the UFC. The finish of the match went just like Mir himself probably envisioned it – Lesnar got overly aggressive and made the rookie mistake of dangling his ankle right in the face of a Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu black belt. Before the MMA neophyte knew what happened, Mir cinched in a deep knee bar and Lesnar had no alternative but to tap out. Before that fateful mistake, it was all Brock Lesnar, as his superior strength and world class wrestling skills appeared to be on the verge of overwhelming Mir. In an action-packed minute, Lesnar took Mir down twice and knocked him to the ground with a wicked punch.

Despite the loss, however, the UFC brass was ecstatic about Lesnar’s performance and about the way everything transpired. It really was a “best case scenario” outcome for the UFC – what they were most afraid of was Mir easily dominating Lesnar. A Lesnar domination of Mir would not have been quite as bad from a business standpoint, but for the UFC, things worked out almost perfectly. Lesnar had a superstar presence, and demonstrated the strength and takedown ability most experts knew that he would bring to the table. He also demonstrated some solid punching power and, despite losing the match on a miscue borne of inexperience, did not look the least bit “lost” or over his head. The guy has superstar charisma and a ton of potential. In other words, Lesnar is a viable commodity for the UFC in the future.
